What is the connection between the 72 Names of G-d and the Sephirot?
According to Jewish Kabbalah, the ten sephirot were created as vessels in which the Divine Essence poured forth the many forces or energies by which we may understand our universe, our lives, ourselves.
The upper triad which is made up of Kether/Crown, Hokhmah/Wisdom and Binah/Understanding are not normally accessed by individuals that meditate upon a holy name or mantra. This is left to Kabbalists with an inordinate amount of practice and humility.
The middle triads is made up of Chesed/Kindness, Geburah/Strength and Tiphereth/Beauty are the triad that we most identify with ourselves since we as human beings can practice kindness or strength in our decisions. Tiphereth is more evident when we are balanced in our attitudes such as when we love our children and can balance that love while at the same time be able to say “no” to their every whim.
The Lower Triad of Netzah/Victory, Hod/Glory and Yesod/Sexual Organ is the most applicable to our lives. Since here we actually exercise the virtues of giving and controlling in every aspect of our lives. The final vessel Yesod implies the ultimate balance of giving and taking. When we can manifest love both spiritually and physically in a sacred manner, we have arrived at the point of Yesod.
The 72 Names of G-d are divided into 12 names for each vessel. The vessels that hold these energies are six beginning from the top: Chesed, Geburah, Tiphereth, Netzah, Hod, and Yesod. The Holy Names carry the essence of their sephira/vessel and impregnate their surroundings with their respective energy.
When the angels or aspects of G-d are called by name, they will respond according to the individual’s need indiscriminate of the person’s faith, race or background. By meditating on the Holy Names of G-d and their ruling Archangels, we can access their benevolence and receive their gifts.
