The Temple of Your Body
DISEASE AND IMBALANCE
As we enter the science of physical disease, we need to keep always in mind that all maladies, as studied in Oriental or Indo-Tibetan schools, originates from mental, emotional or spiritual conflict. Whenever we give strength to negative feelings and emotions and allow them to overrun our lives, we are opening the way for them to forge or gouge a path into our physical map – the body.
Each organ in the body is responsible for the control and balance of a specific emotion. As written in “The Classic of the Yellow Emperor” which discusses Internal Medicine, every major organ is occupied with the transformation of an emotion and processes it in order for us to release it once it has been internalized.
Let us take the example of anger. The liver is a major organ. It is responsible for the transformation of emotions and most specifically of anger. When anger is internalized in our bodies and is not released through verbal expression, meditation or outward discussion with the subject of our irritation, it is stored in our liver.
The liver keeps storing more and more angry episodes that are then accumulated. As the liver PHYSICALLY transforms energy from food substances into nutrition in order to create fresh blood cells (a form of transformation) – so does it transform our expressed emotions from gross matter into fine or ethereal matter by dissipating its components in our energy currents.
These energy currents that we speak of are ‘meridians’ or invisible channels of energy that course through our body in specific routes depending on what organ they relate to. The liver channel or meridian courses through the interior side of the leg. Whenever there are blocks or traumas or episodes in our lives that are unresolved, they must at some point COME OUT or be released through our body if we DO NOT release them consciously through our minds. Hence one may find marks, abscesses, moles, tumors or injury scars marked out throughout the specific channel. These mark are episodes in our lives that were not fully processed by our PHYSICAL BODY.
Our bodies are maps of our lives. A Chinese medicine therapist can see from the marks, color and quality of our skin, muscles and body structure without even invading the interior space of our body such as the nose, ears or mouth, and can tell easily what trials or discomforts we have experienced through our lives. Our bodies give out signposts along the way.
The LIVER – it is responsible for the control of ANGER. When the liver is out of balance, meaning to say it does not operate at full throttle, it is expressed through our body in: bloodshot eyes (incorrect dispersion of blood), inadequate sleep, ruddy cheeks (over-distribution of blood in certain areas), red face and high blood pressure (blood courses through veins at rapid speeds), heart conditions (blockages in the arterial and venal channels), nosebleed (stress), insomnia (no sleep because liver is being overworked in processing components to create fresh blood cells).
Alcoholics look for a downer or depressant in order to ‘calm down’ the system. The alcohol is only a temporary cork, for in the end the individual must still face the same unresolved conflicts the next day. However, the liver has now suffered more traumas because the alcohol is burning it. The blood processing is not adequate or at the least creates very minute quantities of blood cells – not enough to supply the body on a daily basis. Alcoholism simply deadens the emotions (surpress anger) until the next day. Just as the liver is responsible for emotions of anger, all other major and minor organ pairs control the balance and smooth operation of our bodily functions.
Below is a list of the organ pairs and their corresponding emotions:
HEART/SMALL INTESTINE JOY = love
LUNG/LARGE INTESTINE SADNESS = depression
LIVER/GALL BLADDER ANGER = indigestion emotions
KIDNEY/BLADDER BITTER = harsh, sour
STOMACH/SPLEEN FEAR = worry, nervous
